On any given day the projects I’m working on in Visual Studio more often then not are in the recent items list on the start page. I also like having the least amount of things (including the start page) open in Visual Studio when I’m coding. When I was ready to switch from one project to another I found myself going into the menus to reopen the start page manually because it was usually less clicks then opening an existing project and browsing to the solution file wherever it was buried in the file system.
I had the brilliant idea to add the start page command to the main toolbar. This works great but I still found myself forgetting that it was there half the time.
My final solution was to write a quick Visual Studio extension which reopens the start page automatically after closing a solution.
So if you’re interested you can download it from the Visual Studio Gallery or search for “Reopen Start Page” from inside Visual Studio under Extensions and Updates. Works with 2012, 2013, and 2015.
